As
Dean of the College of English, I am pleased to deliver these
welcoming remarks to you. Originally, our College was established
in 1954 as the Department of English, the same year that Hankuk
University of Foreign Studies first opened its doors to students.
In the years since, our university has educated many talented
and capable people, who in their life pursuits have raised the
honor of the university as well as the department and college.
Since the university¡¯s founding, the Department of English
has developed continuously. At the threshold of the 21st century,
it expanded into the Division of English. It was only in 2004
that a College of English was first established at university
anywhere in the world, and it was here at HUFS. We now have
three top-notch departments in the college: the Department of
English Linguistics, the Department of English Literature, and
the Department of English Interpretation and Translation.
Currently, with the distinguished scholars, both domestic and
foreign, of the faculty, the students of all three departments
are nurtured to develop their talents and great potential so
that they can make significant contributions to the global community.
Here at the College of English they can cultivate their intellect
and develop their character before they go out into the world
for the benefit of humanity. In this sense, I am proud to say
that the College of English plays a significant role in providing
our country with expert human resources who have led, now lead,
and will continue to lead South Korea into international arenas
like the United Nations, the World Health Organization, just
to name two.
In keeping abreast with our school President Chul Park¡¯s endeavors
to push forward some new reforms such as the Program of 7+1,
the Program of Internship at Korean Embassies Abroad, the Program
of Internship at KOTRA abroad, and the Program of Joint Degree
Conferment with UPeace, we the faculty of College of English
stand ready to meet with prospective incoming students who will
be educated to be the best in their chosen work in the future.
I want to assure all of you that if you, especially the high-level
high school students, have just logged onto our homepage, your
choosing our College of English at HUFS will be the best choice
of your life. To those parents who are hesitating about which
school to send your sons and daughters, I give my conviction
that you will never regret your decision, realizing that this
is a great and wonderful place of opportunity for your sons
and daughters¡¯ future career and happiness in the world.
Along with all the faculty, I look forward to seeing you soon
here at the English College of Hankuk University of Foreign
Studies.
Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude to all English
College Faculty members who are exerting their best efforts
for the development of the College of English with their research,
lectures, and other contributions. I also wish that glory be
to alumni who provide constant mental and material support to
us from home and abroad, and to our loving students who strive
eagerly developing their potential.
